Record-breaking season for our 2011 Bike Camps
This past summer, we experienced a record-breaking season by empowering 645 children through our youth programs. We expanded our Bike Camp scholarship program to bring programming to our community partnerships at University Park Community Center and Harvey Scott Elementary School. Through the scholarship program, 39 children whose families have a low income participated in our bike camp program. Of those children, 9 did not have a bike and were outfitted with a newly refurbished bike, a helmet, and a lock.
Dorine was one of our Bike Camp scholarship recipients. She is a frequent visitor to our bike shop. One day when Bike Camp had just started, she asked our Production Manager, James, “What’s going on out there?” James told her about Bike Camp and helped her to get enrolled in the program. Dorine participated in the Cruisers Camp and had a blast. Through the program, she earned a lock for her bike, which will help her ride to school each day.
While our team is always sad to see Bike Camp come to an end and that final group of campers ride away from the shop, we are excited to shift gears by kicking off our fall Bike Club season. This fall, we are expecting 80 children to participate in our Bike Clubs at seven sites in North and Northeast Portland, including University Park Community Center, Faubion, James John, Rigler, Harvey Scott, Woodlawn, and Vernon. Over 12 sessions, students will practice everything from how to execute a perfect left turn to fixing a flat tire.
The fun never ends here at the Community Cycling Center! Keep an eye out for Bike Club stories coming up soon.
