Programs for Adults

Create a Commuter at Central City Concern

Our programs aim to improve individual health  and enhance the livability of our communities by helping people gain bicycle knowledge, skills, and confidence.

Earn a Bike Program

The Earn a Bike program provides adults living on low incomes with a bike complete with lights, lock, helmet, rack, and tools. To receive the bike, each participant completes a bike safety and maintenance training course taught by our instructors. This groundbreaking program offers participants a flexible solution to meet their transportation and recreation needs, while promoting healthy activity.

Our Philosophy

Our instructors emphasize how the bicycle is a tool for empowerment and a vehicle for change. Through hands-on, experiential learning, participants gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence to ride to places they need to go.

From the most basic instruction to advanced riding skills, every participant will start where they are comfortable and grow from there. Our instructors receive comprehensive training in the fundamentals of experiential education and bike safety prior to leading a workshop.

All participants will learn:
  • Mechanical skills
  • Safety checks
  • Parts identification
  • Cleaning and basic maintenance
  • Safe riding skills
  • Laws and rules of the road
  • Helmet fitting
  • Making safe decisions on the road
  • Group riding skills
  • Map reading
  • Hand signals
  • How to take a bike on TriMet

We are currently only offering this program with our partner communities at Hacienda and New Columbia.
