Quotes and translations provided by William Francis and Lale Santelices

On Saturday, March 14th, members of Andando en Bicicletas en Cully (ABC) joined Verde for a bike ride to identify barriers to accessing Wellington and Khunamokwst Park.

Khunamokwst is the first developed park in the Cully Neighborhood. The Khunamokwst Grand Opening Celebration will take place on Saturday, May 16th, from 11-3pm

Below are several quotes from participants on the importance of the bike ride and the barriers they identified. The quotes are provided in English and Spanish.

On the importance of the bike ride:

“To have a good time, breathe fresh air, get to know the routes, and spend time with family and friends”—Jose Bracamontes

“To check out the route…it is a good time to share with family. To ride bikes despite the rain and do a little exercise”—Rosaicela Portugal

“So streets get fixed. Cars drive by at high speeds and there is no place for kids to walk at.”—Susana Pacheco

“To fix the place so people and kids can ride their bikes. Kids get wet going to school and if there is a pot hole in front and there is no sidewalk, they have nowhere to go.”—Angel Pulido

“Because I like to ride bikes and get exercise.” Kyara Peraza-Ku (5th grader from Rigler)

“To show the condition of the streets and the barriers that we are face with. Also to see the new park (Khunamokwst park). There are many streets in disrepair and streets without sidewalk, slim streets with fast moving cars. It is important to me to spend the day with my kids and the family.”—Isabel Eusebio

Barriers found on the way to the parks:

“66th Ave. and 68th Ave. between Alberta and Going: there are many pot holes, and the rocks make people fall. Also there is no sidewalk and cars drive by at high speeds. Kids get wet and muddy on their way to school.” –Susana Pacheco

“These are the same routes that our kids use to get to school. Cars drive by really close, so kids get scared because there is nowhere they can escape to. If there was better infrastructure, I would let me kids bike to school, but for now it is too dangerous.” –Yoni Peraza-Ku

“72nd ave. Cars pass by too fast and there is not enough space for people biking or walking. You have to use 72nd to get to school and to the parks, or use Cully Blvd. but it is not easy or safe to cross it. –Yoni Peraza-Ku

—Yoni Peraza-Ku
