Wieden + Kennedy Volunteers clean 17 bikes for Holiday Bike Drive
On Thursday, May 17th, 32 volunteers from Wieden + Kennedy pulled up to our shop on a warm, sunny day in a bright yellow school bus. They arrived eager and excited to get their hands dirty painting and cleaning 17 kids bikes for our annual Holiday Bike Drive.
After a lunch break outside the shop, we began with an opening circle and check in where each individual shared their first bike story. After a flurry of stories that included banana seats, flashy streamers, and first time crashes, Gram Shipley, our Used Inventory Coordinator, strategically divided up the masses to accomplish all of the tasks for the day. I organized a small crew of 4-5 folks who helped us paint our picnic tables and railings. The rest of the group focused on the kids bikes, scrubbing away years worth of grime and rust that accumulated over the years.
Time flew by and before we realized it, we were standing back at our closing circle sharing something we learned from the experience. One fellow mentioned at the end of the day, “I never knew how much you (the Community Cycling Center) all did or what what you were before today and it was really great to be a part of that.”
I am thankful for our volunteers that came and cleaned 17 bikes that will eventually make their way into the hands of children. I am also appreciative of the newly painted picnic tables and railings soon to be at the service of the more than 400 kids we educate through our summer Bike Camp program.
