Medusa, wizards, penguins, and, wait a sec, was that Lady Gaga?

By Breesa Culver, Development Manager

Last Sunday, people all over the Portland metro region woke up early, pulled on wigs and tutus, and accessorized with balloons and sequins. Where were they headed so bright and early on a Sunday morning? The Worst Day of the Year Ride, of course!

With the temperature hovering around the high-30s, more than 3,000 riders came out to ride all over Portland and show off their amazing costumes. Among the many flushed and cheery faces, we spotted Lady Gaga, Medusa, a wizard, and a penguin on a unicycle.

We hosted a rest stop at our bike shop, where riders could stop for hot chocolate, snacks and mechanical assistance. In just over four hours, our volunteer and staff mechanics performed 42 quick fixes – everything from flat fixes to brake adjustments. We also tabled at the finish line and were happy to greet friends and supporters old and new.

A heartfelt thanks from us to everyone who rode on Sunday – we are so grateful for the moving rainbow of enthusiastic riders who pedaled their way across Portland to support our community programs.
