Community Cycling Center partners with El Programa Hispano for Spanish Commuting Workshop

On Saturday, June 7th, the Community Cycling Center held a five-hour urban commuting training session at Hall Elementary school in Gresham in partnership with El Programa Hispano. A response to the heightened requirements for obtaining a driver’s license in Oregon, the workshop was tailored for recent immigrants who need bicycles to get to work as well as for family transportation. The Community Cycling Center instructors presented bicycles as a viable, “alternative” form of transportation.

The workshop was an “event”, says Adult Program Coordinator, Jay Dean, “Participants brought along their whole families.” El Programa Hispano staff provided child care and pizza for lunch. The workshop was taught in Spanish by after-school instructor Aaron Engelke who was assisted by volunteer Todd Roll, and mechanic Alex Perdue. The workshop covered bike safety, route planning, rules of the road, safe locking procedures, and fixing flats. Participants earned eleven bicycles and five trailers and everyone who needed a helmet was fitted for and received one.
