General Position Summary

The Community Cycling Center’s Create a Commuter Program provides low-income adults with fully-outfitted commuter bicycles and five hours of training on safe bicycle commuting. Federally funded Initially through the Job Access Initiative, it is the first program of its kind in the nation. The program provides a flexible option to meet the transportation needs of low-income adults.

We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help us bring this innovative program to the community. The goal of this position is to provide classroom and group ride support to paid instructors during adult Create a Commuter workshops.

Duties

  • Under the supervision of Community Cycling Center instructors, assist during daytime weekday workshops for groups of 15-20 adults
  • Provide support during demonstrations
  • Help students complete maintenance and repair tasks
  • Assist instructor in transporting bicycles and equipment to workshop location
  • Assist in helmet and bike fitting
  • Be able to commit to at least three 6-hour workshops over the course of a year
  • Have a safe and functioning bicycle and knowledge of safe riding skills

Skills

  • Ability to safely ride your own bicycle and obey the rules of the road.
  • Experience facilitating and teaching large groups.
  • Experience with or sensitivity toward issues such as homelessness, addiction recovery, mental illness and physical or mental disability.
  • Ability to remain calm and patient.
  • General knowledge of adult education strategies preferred.
  • Basic to intermediate bicycle maintenance skills preferred.

Position Details

Length of commitment: At least 3 workshops
Estimated total hours: 6-8 hours
Location: Portland Youth Builders, Central City Concern, Transition Projects, Volunteers of America, Housing Authority of Portland, Hacienda, PCC Workforce, Join, IRCO and others.
Schedule: Variable, Spring of 2012.
