General Position Summary

Our Bike Clubs are free, youth earn-a-bike after-school programs where low-income 9 to 12 year olds learn safe riding skills, basic bike maintenance, and have the chance to build their confidence as cyclists.

We’re seeking enthusiastic volunteers to provide support to paid after-school instructors during after-school bike clubs in Portland area schools, assisting in neighborhood rides and in implementing lesson plans. Through this position, you will gain experience in experiential education program facilitation, safe bicycling, bicycle mechanics, and working with diverse and low-income youth.

Duties

  • Assist Bike Club instructors in implementing an after-school bicycle safety program for 12-15 youth (ages 9-11), ensuring safety and enhancing instructor capacity to respond to “teachable moments.”
  • Participate in a comprehensive training including basic bicycle maintenance and safety; elements of experiential education; and behavior management.
  • Maintain a safe environment for all students.
  • Assist during ALL sessions, length depending on the program.
  • Help kids earn their own bike, helmet, and lock!

Skills

  • Experience facilitating youth groups.
  • Experience working with low-income and diverse individuals.
  • General familiarity with experiential education.
  • Ability to ride a bicycle up to 10 miles.
  • Criminal background check required.

Pay Rate and Benefits

Pay: Volunteer
Location: Portland
Schedule: Two days per week, either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. Programs last two hours, typically starting between 2:15 and 3:15 PM. Must be able to commit to assisting during all 12 sessions.
