Ride of Silence – WOW

On Wednesday evening, about 250 cyclists joined Commissioner Sam Adams, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, the Community and Schools Traffic Safety Partnership, the Portland Police Bureau’s Traffic Safety Division, and the Community Cycling Center for the annual Ride of Silence to honor cyclists who have been killed while bicycling.

Bicyclists from around Portland took to the eastside streets. We rode down MLK, 33rd, Glisan, and Stark passing by dozens of drivers sitting in their cars asking what was going on. The police answered questions as we silently rolled. We passed by ghost bikes, many adorned with flowers, showing where cyclists had been killed. The purpose of the ride was to honor those who have been injured or killed, raise awareness that we are here and ask that we all share the road.

We wore black armbands. Sam Adams encouraged us to look out for each other in this community. Evan Manvel of the BTA did the same. It’s up to all of us to make the roads safer in our community, whether we are walking, riding or driving.
