Programs for Youth
Our programs aim to improve individual health, environmental quality, and enhance the livability of our communities by helping individuals gain bicycle knowledge, skills, and confidence.
Bike Camp
In a creative and supportive environment - and with an emphasis on experiential learning - campers ages 6 -15 build confidence, knowledge, and skills. Campers learn how to ride safely, fix their bikes, and travel to fun destinations throughout the city. Read about our adventures during the summer of 2009 here. Learn more about our 2010 Bike Camps here.
Scholarships and earn-a-bike options
We are committed to making bicycling accessible to everyone regardless of income level. Therefore limited financial scholarships and earn-a-bike opportunities are available for Bike Camp.
Bike Club
Our after-school Bike Clubs provide hands-on, experiential after-school workshops in which 9 to 12 year olds from families with low incomes learn safe riding skills, basic bike maintenance, and the importance of wearing a properly fitted helmet. By working hard and participating throughout the course of the 12-session program, participants earn their own bicycle, lock, and helmet to take home!
Holiday Bike Drive
Every winter, with the support of hundreds of volunteers and donors, we provide 500 children with their first bicycles, new helmets, and basic safety education. It is a huge, community-building event that we work toward all year long and culminates in one amazing day in December.
Bikes for Kids
Inspired by our community of supporters and volunteers that create the magic of the Holiday Bike Drive and the need for safe bicycles in low-income communities we found during Understanding Barriers to Bicycling Project research, we decided to extend the spirit of Holiday Bike Drive into the summer! In May 2010, we partnered with Hacienda Community Development Corporation to bring 80 lovingly refurbished bicycles, new helmets and bike safety education to resident children ages 3-8. In July, we will hold another Bikes for Kids event in partnership with New Columbia.
