On Saturday August 4th, the hottest day of the summer so far, the Community Cycling Center and Journey to Freedom co-hosted an African American Heritage ride in N and NE Portland.
Young people participating in Journey to Freedom’s “Book and Boot Camp” geared up at 11:00 AM after a nutritious breakfast prepared by the Green Lady (Kalima Abioto) and rode to Unthank Park, Dawson’s Park, and Matt Dishman Community Center. At each stop they learned a little bit about the history of African American people in Portland.
Reverend Renee’ Ward offered first hand anecdotes to the researched history, bringing it to life. Afterward, everyone rode to Irving park to cool down in the fountains before the toasty ride home.
