Recycling
Reuse rules at the Community Cycling Center! With the help of our shop staff and volunteers we attempt to put every donated bike back into use through our programs and retail shop. Even materials that we cannot put into direct transportation reuse are redirected and recycled through a variety of partnerships and programs here at the Community Cycling Center.
Volunteer
With the support of hundreds of volunteers, we prepare unusable bikes to be recycled. Volunteers from corporations, schools, and community and youth groups come to help us with this grand effort on a regular basis. In 2006, the Community Cycling Center recycled 64,000 pounds of metal! We are always eager to involve volunteers in the recycling process at the CCC, and welcome people of all ages and experience levels. To be a part of the bike recycling fun contact Volunteer and Events Manager Neal Armstrong at Neal@CommunityCyclingCenter.org or 503.546.8864.
Scrap Wednesday
We are ending the SCRAP Wednesday program at the end of January.
We will continue to offer ways you can access recycled materials.
For now:
1. We have a FREE box located at the front of the shop next to the community stand. We will place reusable items in the box.
2. If you are involved in a community- focused reuse project and would like to request materials from our bicycle recycling activities, please complete and return our Recycling Material Request Form, or contact Used Inventory Coordinator James Keating at Recycler@CommunityCyclingCenter.org.
Partnerships
The Community Cycling Center partners with artists and companies in the community to promote the creative reuse of bike parts. One of our oldest partners, Resource Revival, turns used bicycle scrap into functional and decorative artwork. From tables and chairs to key chains and wine racks, their work is a beautiful illustration of turning “trash” into art.
We also have an exciting partnership with the Seattle company Alchemy Goods. With the mission of “Turning Useless into Useful,” AG transforms used inner tubes into casual and messenger style bags.
Both of these organizations help to defer the costs associated with our recycling operation by reimbursing us for harvested materials.
Reuse Material Requests
While we would like to support all reuse projects here at the Community Cycling Center, due to high demand and limited resources we are only able to provide reuse project materials to a few not-for-profit projects each year. If you are involved in a community- focused reuse project and would like to request materials from our bicycle recycling activities please complete and return our Recycling Material Request Form, or contact Used Inventory Coordinator James Keating at Recycler@CommunityCyclingCenter.org.
International Community
We also collaborate with organizations that endorse bicycle education and reuse on an international level. Pastors for Peace bring bikes and other supplies to various countries, offering transportation and educational opportunities to locals. We supplied 20 bikes for the Friendshipment Caravan to Cuba which left in an old yellow school bus in June 2006. Additionally, in the fall of 2006, we provided 477 bikes to the Village Bicycle Project, which promotes bicycle reuse in Ghana.
